The parents of 12-year-old Karli have bought an old hotel in the Alps. Whilst exploring the former grand hotel, he discovers that he can travel through time in an old goods lift – and ends up in the year 1938!

There, Karli befriends Hannah, a Jewish girl, and Georg, a shoe-shiner. But Karli doesn’t dare tell his friends what he’s learnt about the year 1938, or why it’s vital that Hannah doesn’t return to Berlin. When Georg is wrongly accused of theft, his new friends want to help him and find the real crook. In the process, the three of them discover that strange things are going on in the hotel.
