Welcome to Urinetown, the musical! Not the place, of course. You’ll be hearing plenty more about Urinetown, the place, as the show goes on. This, however, is the Berlin premiere of Urinetown, the musical, presented by the brilliant but mad musical team.
Urinetown is set in a dystopian, not-too-distant future in which a catastrophic water shortage has led to a ban on private toilets. Citizens are forced to use public toilets, the prices of which are controlled by a single powerful corporation. Then a hero enters the stage, determined to cast off the shackles of oppression and lead the people to the freedom to urinate!
This musical satire, winner of three Tony Awards, offers something for everyone: capitalism, resource scarcity, corporate greed, state propaganda, inequality, environmental crises, love, Brechtian breaking of the fourth wall, populism, Malthusian economics, revenge, rebellion and more silly walks than you can count.
Because *Urinetown – The Musical* pokes fun at musical theatre itself.
So, come to Urinetown! It’s a dreadful place to live, but a hilarious place to spend an evening.
