Phone Program “Culture on Call”

On 3 October 1990, at midnight during the celebrations in front of the Reichstag building in Berlin, the former Chancellor stood on the VIP stand alongside Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker, Federal Chancellor Helmut Kohl and Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher. With tears in his eyes, he witnessed the realisation of his life’s work: the reunification of Germany.

To mark German Unity Day, they look back together. How did Willy Brandt experience the events of 1989–90? What role did his policies towards the East and Germany as a whole play in overcoming the division? And why was German unity, for him, conceivable only within a European context?
