‘… that your likeness makes an incomprehensible impression on people,’ wrote the sculptor Johann Heinrich Dannecker (1758–1841) to Friedrich Schiller (1759–1805) about his bust of the poet. The likeness became far more than a portrait: it shaped the way Schiller was perceived by people across generations.
This talk explores the creation of the bust, the relationship between the artist and the poet, and the work’s lasting influence. You will also discover why Schiller even considered moving to Berlin in 1804.
