The Fontane Pharmacy is situated within the Bethanien Deaconess Hospital and is now part of the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg Museum. In the turbulent revolutionary year of 1848, Theodor Fontane took up his post here as a ‘potion-mixer’. But Bethanien was a place of tranquillity, and the poet enjoyed his final year as a (writing) pharmacist amongst the devout deaconesses and their patients.
The pharmacy has been preserved in its original state – complete with vessels from contemporary collections.
- During Open Monument Days (12 and 13 September), the pharmacy will be open from 2 pm to 6 pm.
- Talks on ‘Theodor Fontane and Bethanien Hospital’ will take place at 3 pm and 5 pm.
