From the invention of the pan flute to the story of King Midas or the abduction of Europa, from the Deucalion Flood to Aeneas’s flight from ruined Troy.

Ovid’s *Metamorphoses* is among the most exciting works of poetry from antiquity and had an influence on early European painting comparable to that of the Bible.

Consequently, the Gemäldegalerie also houses numerous depictions of the often extremely bizarre tales of transformation involving gods and humans, animals, plants, and planets.

This lecture series explores these myths and demonstrates how artists repeatedly reinterpreted their narrative power, symbolism, and dramatic visual language.
