On the International Day of Indigenous Peoples
The documentary “The Battle for Laikipia” portrays the Laikipia Nature Reserve in Kenya as the epicenter of an escalating land conflict. The indigenous Samburu people, nomadic herders, are coming under increasing pressure due to persistent drought, while well-irrigated pastures remain in the hands of white landowners.

Against the backdrop of unresolved historical injustices, the conflict over scarce resources is intensifying and increasingly turning violent. The film highlights how closely the climate crisis, colonialism, and current power dynamics are intertwined.
Survival International, the global movement for the rights of indigenous peoples, will introduce the evening and the topic. Since 1969, Survival has been working closely with indigenous peoples worldwide and advocating for their land rights through campaigns and public outreach.
