Fritz Lang, Germany 1921, 83’, German with subtitles
In his 1921 film *Der müde Tod* (*Death Is Tired*), Death is fed up with his difficult task. When he must tear apart a young couple newly in love, he gives the surviving young woman a chance to bring her beloved husband back. He sets her a task that is only seemingly easy: if she can save a life, her beloved will return. Death gives her three chances, which Fritz Lang sets against exotic backdrops: the Orient, ancient Venice, and ancient China. But the woman tries in vain to redeem her husband, until Death sets her a fourth task, which she ultimately manages to accomplish in a melancholic way.
