About the film:

This touching and wildly funny film adaptation of Joachim Meyerhoff’s bestselling autobiographical novel tells the extraordinary story of young Joachim. As the son of the director, he grows up on the grounds of a psychiatric clinic. Surrounded by the patients—who are like an extended family to him—and his two older brothers, Joachim experiences a childhood far outside the norm. Director Sonja Heiss masterfully captures the balance between childlike vitality, deep sorrow, and the difficult question of what “normal” actually is.
