Special tour with Rudolf G. Scharmann, former director of the castle
More than any other Brandenburg-Prussian residence and garden complex, Charlottenburg in particular was shaped by the princesses.
Starting in 1695, they had nearly all the apartments furnished and garden areas landscaped here. On various guided tours led by former palace director Rudolf G. Scharmann, you’ll gain insights into their lives.
In memory of Sophie Charlotte of Hanover (1668–1705), Prussia’s first queen, her summer residence at Lietzenburg—along with the surrounding village, which later became a town and then a district—was renamed Charlottenburg after her death. Sophisticated and highly gifted, she was particularly devoted to music and philosophy. She had Germany’s earliest French-style Baroque garden laid out around her court of the muses in Lietzenburg.
