Kinemathek – Art House Theater
As early as the 1980s, a group of left-wing dropouts from Germany had been drawn to this barren region. Their motivations are varied: political disillusionment, the dream of a self-determined life, or government subsidy programs for settling on abandoned farms.
Jörg Foth accompanies the families through their challenging daily lives and observes their struggle to survive amidst the rugged natural landscape. In doing so, he explores old ideals and new realities. The result is a sensitive portrait of different ways of life, whose questions and contradictions remain as relevant today as ever.
This film, which is shown far too rarely, can be experienced here in its original 16mm format.
