UMWEGE brings together the final choreographic projects of this year’s graduates from Danceworks Berlin and invites audiences to discover the diverse artistic perspectives of a new generation of choreographers and performers.

The evening features short pieces that have emerged from individual research processes and offer insights into the graduates’ questions, working methods, and artistic languages.

The works mark a personal moment of exploration, experimentation, and refinement of the graduates’ own choreographic practices.

The title UMWEGE is intended as a space of possibility for new perspectives, unexpected encounters, and the realization that insight rarely arises in a linear fashion. The works presented this evening do not offer clear-cut answers but rather navigate questions, ruptures, and open-ended processes. They invite the audience to experience movement as a form of thought and choreography as a space for reflection, encounter, and imagination.

Drawing on their individual artistic interests and perspectives, the graduates explore themes such as interpersonal relationships, closeness and distance, rhythm as a unifying and structuring element, as well as social and sociopolitical issues. Other works address identity, memory, care, power dynamics, or the relationships between body, space, and time.

Equally diverse are the methods and movement languages that emerge in the process.

Improvisation, composition, somatic practices, and the use of voice, language, music, or visual media serve as starting points for independent choreographic approaches. Some works emerge from precise formal structures, while others arise from intuitive or collaborative processes.

What they have in common is an understanding of movement as a research tool and choreography as an open, experimental practice. They invite the audience to experience the richness of contemporary choreography in all its complexity.
