Shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall, East Germany was hit by a second major wave of layoffs. Women working in the GDR’s large industrial plants—operating massive open-pit excavators, loading briquettes onto trains, and overseeing the Leuna chemical plant—were among those who lost their jobs.

Looking back, they speak with confidence about the independence their work once gave them. Amid lost utopias and radical upheaval, they recall their daily work lives in factories and lignite mines that have since disappeared. A powerful film about a generation of women who have retained their pride and determination to this day.
