Geppetto, an old carpenter, longs for a child. One evening, he carves a puppet out of a piece of wood—and suddenly it comes to life. Pinocchio is born. And with him come two questions to which neither Geppetto nor Pinocchio knows the answer: What does it mean to be a father? What does it mean to be a child?

And Pinocchio wants to find out everything right away. Off he goes, first to school, of course. It can’t be that hard, Pinocchio thinks: read today, write tomorrow, done the day after. If only the journey there weren’t so exciting! There’s the fox and the cat, who know where gold grows. Or the colorful toyland, where anything goes. Pinocchio follows a thousand detours until, instead of arriving at school, he finds himself standing by the vast ocean.
And Geppetto? He’s waiting for Pinocchio to return. He wanted a child, but he didn’t expect it to turn the world upside down so impatiently. Eventually, he realizes that he must set out himself to understand Pinocchio.
In Philipp Löhle’s retelling of this magical adventure story, overwhelmed parents meet overwhelmed children and discover together what they can be to one another when they set aside their expectations.
Director Alexander Riemenschneider brings “Pinocchio” to the stage as a musical for the whole family.
