Klaus Mann’s novel, written in exile—a satire on opportunism and the betrayal of once-respectable values—was immediately banned in 1936. At its center is Gustaf Gründgens, alias Hendrik Höfgen, the famous actor who, under National Socialism, became “a clown to entertain the murderers.”
