Klaus Mann’s novel, written in exile—a satire on opportunism and the betrayal of once-respectable values—was immediately banned in 1936. At its center is Gustaf Gründgens, alias Hendrik Höfgen, the famous actor who, under National Socialism, became “a clown to entertain the murderers.”

Frank Castorf confronts the audience with the intoxication of power, the eroticism of betrayal, and the allure of ruin—no less seductive then than it is today.
