Program accompanying the exhibition "Inventing Queer Cinema"

Rosa von Praunheim’s film *“It Is Not the Homosexual Who Is Perverse, but the Situation in Which He Lives”* caused a sensation in 1971 and led to the founding of numerous gay rights movements across Germany for the first time.

Instead of appealing for empathy and understanding, Praunheim sharply criticized gay men: He claimed they were narrow-minded, lonely, vain, and apolitical—and that they should finally take to the streets!

A film like a resounding slap in the face—it’s no coincidence that it also plays a central role in the exhibition “Inventing Queer Cinema.”

The Deutsche Kinemathek is screening the film once again and invites the audience and invited guests to take a critical stance. An open discussion without a podium or stage, in which participants aim to re-examine the film’s impact and theses.

Guests: Martin Dannecker (sexologist, author), Jochen Hick (director, journalist, author), Faraz Shariat (director, producer, author)
