Program accompanying the exhibition "Inventing Queer Cinema"

Queer avant la lettre: In 1970, photographer Elfi Mikesch began her career as a director and cinematographer. Known for her dancing, fluid images that transport the audience into unprecedented states of disorientation and dreams, she has served as cinematographer on countless films by Rosa von Praunheim, Werner Schroeter, and Monika Treut.

These collaborations are brimming with queerness, anarchic energy, and political commitment. From *Ich denke oft an Hawaii* (1978) and the photo-film *Execution – A Study of Mary* (1979) to her documentary *Krieg oder Frieden* (2024), Mikesch has directed over 20 productions herself. Fiona Berg and Maja Roth talk with Mikesch about her queer life and work.

Guest: Elfi Mikesch (cinematographer, director, photographer) Moderators: Fiona Berg (feminist elsewheres), Maja Roth (HBK Braunschweig)
