This year’s edition of the chamber music series “Musik bildet” focuses on “Schubert and more”—organized by the Verein Konzertleben e.V. in collaboration with the Max Planck Institute for Human Development.

Artistic director and pianist Catalin Serban conceived the series together with the ensemble Spielende Insel, which he founded with cellist Andrei Ioniță. This time, the focus is on a dialogue between Franz Schubert and the French-influenced music of the late Romantic period.

Together with guests Anna Im (violin) and Nilay Özdemir (viola), a program is taking shape in which different musical languages meet—united by a central element: melody.

Schubert’s music is characterized in a special way by an inexhaustible melodic inventiveness. His lines often seem like singing—immediate, expansive, and of great inner clarity. This quality finds a surprising resonance in the French-influenced music of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In works by George Enescu and Eugène Ysaÿe, a similar focus on the melodic line is evident—combined with tonal sophistication and individual expressiveness. In Gabriel Fauré’s music, too, the melody becomes the vehicle for a delicate, often ethereal musical language.
