Giuseppe Verdi’s (1813–1901) final opera buffa, based on Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor and Henry IV—premiered at La Scala in 1893—seamlessly weaves subtle humor with profound humanity.
The eponymous knight Sir John Falstaff embodies the hubris of old age through triadic comedy, while the women of Windsor act as triumphant agents of feminine reason.
Verdi orchestrates grandiose failure as a cathartic triumph, in which particular vanities dissolve into universal laughter.
Witty ensembles, sparkling coloratura, and metrical brilliance culminate in the fugal finale: “Tutto nel mondo è burla”—the quintessential humanistic punchline.
