James Turrell (*1943) is one of the most significant artists of our time. He dedicates his entire body of work to exploring the diverse manifestations of natural and artificial light. He pushes the boundaries of perception. In his light spaces, the architecture appears dematerialized, relieved of its heaviness, and the visitor directly experiences the presence of pure light. Turrell’s work in the chapel of the Dorotheenstädtischer Friedhof is specifically timed to coincide with sunset.
The permanent installation is Turrell’s only publicly accessible artwork in Berlin and can only be viewed during sunset hours.
