The world at a crossroads
In their book *Munich 38: The World at a Crossroads* (2026), Christian Goeschel and Daniel Hedinger examine the appeasement policy of Great Britain and France. Its aim was to placate Hitler through concessions and thereby persuade him to back down.
At the conference in Munich on September 29–30, 1938, Chamberlain and Daladier finally signed an agreement under which Czechoslovakia was to cede the Sudetenland to Germany. By the time World War II broke out in Europe just under a year later, it was clear that the policy of appeasement had failed.
