Exhibition

Qin Yufen is one of the leading Chinese artists of her generation. Her preferred media are usually large dimensioned room installations. Qin's characteristic materials, which make her work unmistakable, include clothes racks, barbed wire, bamboo, fabric, sometimes she works with experimental sound. Often her works have political and social references, which, however, never seem bold and only decipher themselves in the contemplation and reflexion.

While her earlier works often dealt with China's cultural past and its own cultural imprint and identity - as can be observed in other artists in the diaspora - today she is concerned with contemporary issues, also in a global dimension, and in particular with the increasing violence in politics and society.
For the exhibition "Leben" in the Schwartzsche Villa, she has conceived two new extensive installations. The materials silk, bamboo and barbed wire are both symbolic and purely aesthetic.
Another of the artist's works can currently be seen in Berlin at the Hamburger Bahnhof, "Making Paradise".

At the opening on 28 June at 7 pm the work "Hidden Landscapes" (2017/18) for sheng and cello by Gabriel Iranyi will be premiered by the internationally renowned sheng player Wu Wei and cellist Ehrengard von Gemmingen.
Gabriel Iranyi on his composition: "Several of my compositions have been inspired by works by visual artists such as "Leonardo", "Klee" or "Brancusi". This includes the "Hidden Landscapes", which will have their world premiere as a commissioned work on the occasion of the vernissage "Leben" of the artist Qin Yufen. The fascinating instrumental possibilities of the Sheng (Chinese chromatic mouth organ) and the cello, performed by such internationally renowned musicians as Wu Wei and Ehrengard von Gemmingen, will guide the listeners through many "hidden landscapes". The plasticity of the sound layers and their sensuality correspond to the artist's work by means of extended techniques of the interpreters."
