maybe a tail is riding in the bus all day
The mermaid
is one of the best-known mythical creatures and has been part of a wide variety
of fables and legends for centuries: from the Brazilian Iaras (mother of the
sea), the Njuzu from Zimbabwe to the Danube Sirens of the Nibelungen epic, who
are well known in this country.

of fables and legends for centuries: from the Brazilian Iaras (mother of the

They all have one thing in common: they are female monsters who look or sing too beautifully and are thus fatally seductive. These figures were not created without pedagogical intent: The mermaid gave shape to the menace of the female body and the temptation she represented for the "heroic man". With Mermaiding I (Maybe a tail is driving in the bus all day) we declare the mermaid tails to be independent agents, tired of their redemptive one-sided feminine elegance. Their topless tails tap out their own rhythms and nest as a matter of course in the historically furnished living rooms and outside areas of Schloss Britz. Mermaid tails made of latex beat and stroke each other in the hunting room. Elsewhere, tails made of tapestry fabrics rhythmically twitch to match the Gründerzeit textiles in the palace.
In the performative installation, the mixed creatures become playful object-subjects, conforming to their environment, exhibiting themselves almost casually without shame, thus softening their plain moral function.
The intervention is made possible by support from the Department of Culture Berlin-Neukölln with funds from the Decentralised Cultural Work.
