(80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp

For non-violent coexistence, against anti-Semitism and racism!

On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp, the 26th chain of lights will take place in Pankow on Monday, 27.01.2025 from 18:00.

The meeting point is at 18:00 in front of the former Jewish Orphanage Pankow, now the Janusz Korzcak Library, at Berliner Str. 120/121, 13187 Berlin. Please bring your own candles.

After the opening event, which will be opened at 18:00 by District Mayor Dr. Cordelia Koch, the participants will walk with candles to the Pankow church. On the way, there will be a stop with speeches in front of the former garden house of Josef Garbáty.

At the Breite Str. / Berliner Str. intersection, traffic will be interrupted for a minute's silence. Afterwards there will be a commemorative event with Jalda Rebling in the Alt-Pankow church.

Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 27
January 27 has been an official day of remembrance in the Federal Republic of Germany since 1996. Since 1999, committed people in Pankow have been organizing a chain of lights to commemorate the liberation of Auschwitz by Soviet soldiers. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation.

The Commission for Civic Work, together with the Protestant parish of Alt-Pankow and the Pankow District Association of Persecutees of the Nazi Regime - Association of Anti-Fascists (VVN-BdA), is giving remembrance a place, a space and a form with the 26th chain of lights on the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust.

The organizers are not only concerned with commemorating the murdered Jewish fellow citizens and the many other victims. They also want to make it clear that the challenges are not diminishing, indeed they are obviously growing. This is another reason why the event is intended to make a contribution to living together in mutual acceptance - regardless of origin, religion and attitude to life.

Against the backdrop of increasing xenophobia, growing anti-Semitism and nationalism, all interested parties are called upon to participate in the commemorative event and show their commitment to solidarity in the district. In the spirit of commemoration, we ask that you refrain from displaying national symbols and party flags.
