As part of Spätschicht x C/O Berlin, Andrew Durbin, author and editor-in-chief of frieze magazine, will give a reading with a slideshow about the queer lives and stories that Peter Hujar documented, particularly in the 1960s and 1970s. The starting point for the talk is his forthcoming book, *The Wonderful World That Almost Was: A Life of Paul Thek and Peter Hujar*.
Throughout his artistic career, photographer Peter Hujar documented all aspects of queer life—from the intimacy of the bedroom to the dressing rooms of experimental theaters in downtown New York and the cruising spots on Manhattan's West Side.
The reading explores the feeling of what it might have been like to capture the overwhelming joy and nervous energy immediately following the Stonewall riots. What was it like to witness the smoldering sensuality of the men who met at Christopher Street Pier?
The one-hour lecture will be followed by a 20-minute Q&A session.
