About Musicals by the Book
Stories do more than just transform us to other places and times. They let us step into the hearts and minds of people we would never meet, in situations we can only dream of. Through stories, we learn what it is to be human. Musicals by the Book explores the power those stories have with a 21-song journey through musicals based on famous books. Some of them you know… but some might surprise you!Through the show, you will experience a range of tales from well-known classics like Oliver! to contemporary hits like The Outsiders. We chose to feature The Great Gatsby for its timeless exploration of ambition, love, and the pursuit of a dream—themes that resonate just as strongly today as they did a century ago—brought to life with dazzling music and Jazz Age spectacle. In contrast, Matilda captures the wit, resilience, and imagination of childhood, reminding us that even the smallest voices can spark extraordinary change. Together, these sections show us how a book can be more than just a reader’s companion; they are worlds waiting to take Center stage!
“I love books, in fact, if there was a word greater than love I would use that instead,” says co-Director Stephanie Kuiters-McEvoy. “Being transported to a different time and place, Meeting new friends and caring so deeply for the journey of others - it’s addictive. The only other medium that makes me feel this way is musicals, so we had the bright idea to combine them! Bysharing the stories behind the songs and giving old tales new life with music, the show will delight even the most avid reader and musical nerd as it promises to make new connections, and it’s the perfect introduction to musicals for the newest fans in the audience. Maybe you'll find your new favourite song or leave needing to read a new book! You’ll only know when you've seen the show. Look forward to seeing you there!”
“Books were where I first discovered my love of stories. To this day, nothing compares to the smell of a bookshop, the feel of pages turning in my hand, and the melancholy that comes with finishing a favourite story. Musicals by the Book reflects our deep love of growing up with These stories. Our incredible cast and crew have created something truly magical.” Oliver Sachgau, Co-Director.
This show is great for all musical lovers alike, for kids aged 8 to 108.
