The multimedia exhibition by the New Media class at Berlin University of the Arts brings together the perspectives of current and former students who question whether technological developments should be pursued and at what cost.
Ω = Unit of electrical resistance. Resistance that exists between two points of an electrical conductor, against the status quo, against established practices.
Concept of the exhibition
How do political, electrical, and mythical energies correspond with each other, and how strong is the belief in them? How are they structured, and how do they shape human interaction? Can power be stabilized, accumulated, or optimized? What does it mean to lose balance, to fall, or to stand still? What kind of balance is created by movement? In recent decades, technological development has led to strong dependencies on systems that structure our communication, our movement, and our relationships in the digital space. These systems concentrate energy, decision-making, and power, shape public discourse, and at the same time restrict who can participate in it. The exhibition is a collection of perspectives that address these questions—not to provide a uniform answer, but to keep tensions, interruptions, and countercurrents open for reflection.
Ω. Definition of the end, the opposite of the beginning.
The be-all and end-all.
Class for New Media
The New Media class at Berlin University of the Arts works in research, development, and cooperation on new trends in art and design. The focus is on digital thinking. The class is part of the project-based Visual Communication degree program and represents a specialization within it, in which students work on a given or freely chosen topic from the field of art and design with new media.
This results in devices, experiments, spatial interventions, digital tools, and even digital worlds. Established techniques include programming, electronics, 3D modeling, material experiments, CAD, model building, and mechatronics. Students spend a semester designing, researching, programming, and building a project based on a specific topic. The selection of topics reflects current developments in society and ranges from technology-oriented research to the discussion of current social issues.
In intensive discussions, students learn to think conceptually from the ground up, develop projects, and use prototype design for understanding and communication.
