Atlantis still exists, hidden deep in the Egyptian desert. An adventure film reminiscent of Indiana Jones, Medusa, and the Ring of the Nibelung.
Stephan von Bothmer interprets the Atlantis film on his CineTronium with ancient archaic sounds and futuristic tones, creating a shimmering and pulsating soundscape between desert and myth. Atlantis, with the enigmatic power of its ruler Antinéa, becomes a musical mirage.
A mysterious queen lures two French officers deep into the Sahara – to the sunken city of Atlantis. The film blends colonial adventure, love tragedy, and exotic fantasy into a grand silent epic. It wasn't filmed in a studio, but actually in the North African desert; sand, rocks, and vastness play just as important a role as the human characters.
The ruler Antinéa embodies a dangerous attraction: those who succumb to her become part of a gallery of fallen lovers. The film tells of the fascination with the foreign, but also of the destruction left behind by claims of ownership and the lust for conquest. [Jacques Feyder, F/B, 1921]
