A critical journey through colonial map worlds with Patricia Vester

The school wall map ‘Germany's Colonies’ hangs in the War Room of the BERLIN GLOBAL exhibition. It was used in classrooms from 1937 onwards and shows how wars were already being prepared in the classroom.

Colonial revisionist demands and aggressive Nazi propaganda will be less present and visible in the exhibition space in future. During this year's Black History Month, illustrator and intervention designer Patricia Vester worked with interested visitors to develop new perspectives on how to deal with maps.

Patricia Vester sought a sensitive approach to historical map material and invited visitors to accompany her in this endeavour. The result is a visual, critical journey through the world of school maps and teaching materials from German publishing history. Topics include spatial fears and spatial appropriation, scanned cities, digital hiking and travelling as a Black German. In this event, she presents the results, talks about the collective design process and shows the resulting short film. The film documentary also offers freely accessible material for teachers to use in the classroom.
