For millennia, mankind believed that the Earth was at the centre of the universe. Since the first view through a telescope, our perspective has changed radically. Today we know: Our sun is just one ordinary star among hundreds of billions of stars in our Milky Way.

Increasingly powerful telescopes and space probes have shown that even our solar system is only one of countless planetary systems in our galaxy. What is needed for life to emerge on these worlds as well, and what might it look like? Since the dawn of humankind, we have been preoccupied with the question: Are we alone in space?
