Kater Blau
Techno on the banks of the Spree
Friedrichshain is known for its lively club scene. One address stands out time and again and is familiar to most Berliners: Kater Blau on the grounds of the Holzmarkt 25 artists' collective. From Friday to Monday morning, people party to house, techno and electro music here among wooden shacks and circus tents.
Casual festival aesthetics in Friedrichshain
Hardly any other nightclub fits its neighbourhood as well as Kater Blau fits Friedrichshain. A wide variety of night owls come here to party, as the club has made a name for itself among the city's millennials for its relaxed door policy. Glittering festival-goers dance alongside techno fans dressed in black and visitors to Berlin from all over the world.
While classic techno is played on the Heinz Hopper floor, the Acid Arch is dedicated to more alternative music styles. The live performances here, with ambient sounds and expansive beats, are the perfect soundtrack to round off a weekend of dancing.
The long history of Kater Blau
Around 300 years ago, the area on the banks of the Spree was used for processing and transporting timber. This original function of the site is still reflected today in the name and design of the Holzmarkt 25 urban quarter. The first club on the site was Bar 25, which opened in 2003 and quickly gained international renown. After it closed, Kater Holzig was built nearby, until Kater Blau was finally founded in 2014. The 12,000 m² cooperative urban quarter is home to numerous studios, workshop rooms, music halls and cafés in addition to the club.
Our tips
- The wooden benches and sofas in the club's outdoor area are the perfect place to admire the sunrise over the Spree.
- Kater Blau thrives on artists in residence and regularly recurring formats such as Katernacht (Kater Night) or KaterWeekend (Kater Weekend).
- Unlike many other Berlin clubs, Kater Blau does not have an all-black dress code. Here, colourful outfits, lots of glitter and creative statements are the order of the day!
