Women artists in the Alte Nationalgalerie
Have you heard of Anna Dorothea Therbusch, Sabine Lepsius or Maria Slavona? Female artists have existed since art itself began. However, apart from a few who have secured their place in art history, most of them are unknown today.
Alongside contemporary stars such as Paula Modersohn-Becker and Camille Claudel, the Alte Nationalgalerie presents works by Marie Ellenrieder, Caroline Bardua and Louise Caroline Sophie Seidler, among others – female artists whose lives and reception stories vividly illustrate the struggle for visibility they faced.
On 25 January 2026, from 11:00 to 15:30, the Alte Nationalgalerie and the Friedrichswerdersche Kirche will dedicate a day to the female artists in the collection. Come by and discover the permanent exhibitions with a new perspective!
A cooperation project between the Alte Nationalgalerie and fair share! Sichtbarkeit für Künstlerinnen* e.V.
Since 2024, the project ‘mind the *gap! New Visibility for Female Artists’ has been working with cultural institutions to introduce previously underrepresented female artists of the modern era to the public. On Female Artists' Day, six female artists will be presented at the Alte Nationalgalerie and the Friedrichswerdersche Kirche in Berlin. Monographic texts are currently being written on the painters and sculptors of the 18th and late 19th centuries: Elisabet Ney, Sabine Lepsius, Maria Slavona, Katharina Felder, Caroline Bardua and Dora Hitz.
Programme
Guided tours on this topic will be offered throughout the day. The detailed programme will be published shortly.
Participation in the guided tours is free of charge with a valid admission ticket. Registration takes place on site.
