Garden tour
The mysterious Grotto Hill was built for King Frederick William III and Queen Louise towards the end of the 18th century. A colorful pavilion in the Far Eastern style crowned the hill, while a grotto decorated with mirrored glass, porcelain, and shells, and a seemingly sunken ancient temple completed the picturesque ensemble.
After 1945, the unused site fell into disrepair. In 2013, archaeological excavations uncovered surprisingly well-preserved parts of the grotto and temple ruins. These finds, along with considerable civic engagement and skilled craftsmanship, made the restoration of the Grotto Hill possible.
