Along the former Berlin Wall

For nearly thirty years, the Berlin Wall stood as an insurmountable barrier between the two Berlin districts of Kreuzberg and Mitte. It was torn down in 1990, leaving behind large swaths of inner-city brownfield sites.

Amid this former no-man’s-land, fascinating housing projects can now be discovered—many built by housing cooperatives. These private initiatives prioritize aesthetics and ecology over financial considerations. The result is diverse and innovative architecture in which sustainability and community play a key role.

The route along the former Wall strip leads via Engeldamm and Engelbecken to the former border crossing on Heinrich-Heine-Straße. Along the way are numerous contemporary residential and commercial buildings, two houses by the Taut brothers, and a forgotten subway station. Passing the remains of a wholesale market hall, the tour ends at the Aufbauhaus on Moritzplatz.
