When Kevin Parker announces a new album, it's more than just an indie event – it's a cultural signal. Under the name Tame Impala, the Australian has traveled an extraordinary path over the past fifteen years: from a bedroom producer in Perth to the style-defining musician of his generation.
His fifth studio album, "Deadbeat," demonstrates once again how effortlessly Parker's sound oscillates between past, present, and future.
From an early age, Parker was obsessed with '60s guitars. At twelve, he was playing riffs at home, and at fifteen, he was imitating Jimmy Page. His breakthrough came in 2007, when Dee Dee Dums won an Australian band competition. Shortly thereafter, it became Tame Impala, Parker's solo project and laboratory of obsessive soundscapes. "Innerspeaker" (2010) brought psychedelic rock into the present, while "Lonerism" (2012) cemented his reputation as a studio perfectionist. With "Currents" (2015), he transitioned from a retro sound to synthetic elegance, while "The Slow Rush" (2020) finally brought worldwide chart topping and festival headliners.
"Deadbeat" continues this development, but in a rawer, minimalist way. Inspired by the rave and bush-doof culture of Western Australia, the record feels like a return to Parker's roots – hypnotic, euphoric, and simultaneously dark. Tracks like "Loser," the epic "End of Summer," and the single "Dracula" combine club-like intensity with catchy melodies. Lyrically, Parker tells the story of an eternal "deadbeat" – an ironic loser trapped in his own loops, who creates art from it.
But Tame Impala reveal their true greatness live. What is meticulously crafted in the studio grows into monumental soundscapes on stage: light and sound merge, reverberating bass lines and flowing guitar lines immerse entire venues in trance-like ecstasy. Parker knows like no other how to combine introspection and collective experience – one reason why Tame Impala enjoys cult status as headliners at Glastonbury and Coachella.
Kevin Parker returns to Berlin in spring 2026. A must-see for anyone who wants to not just hear the sound of Tame Impala, but physically experience it.
