an evening by Henri Maximilian Jakobs
How would it feel to always wear a snowsuit, even at the beach or at the outdoor pool? Johann, the main character in "Paradise Conditions," feels like that most of the time – or like a Wolpertinger, a mythical creature composed of various ill-matched animals.
Whether on a beach vacation, at work at the Berlin sausage start-up "Le Sausage," or at the outdoor pool – something isn't quite right. It takes a failed love affair and a trip into the depths of psychiatric care for it to become clear: Johann is trans* and must change something fundamental if life is to continue and perhaps even become paradise. Against all odds and with the help of his best friend Louise, Johann finally showers in the light and stands calmly in front of the mirror.
Henri Maximilian Jakobs has written a book about a big decision that he also made himself. His novel "Paradise Conditions" tells the story of a transition, the long path to self-discovery, and the obstacle course through authorities, offices, and social challenges, combining empathy and biting humor. For this narrative, he seeks a form on the studio stage to make it comprehensible using words, sounds, and an oven.
HENRI MAXIMILIAN JAKOBS was born and raised in Munich; after studying jazz music, he lives in Berlin as a musician, author, and actor. He releases records and tours under his own name and with various bands.
Since 2021, he has also appeared in various roles in Berlin, including at the Theater an der Parkaue, Heimathafen Neukölln, the Sophiensaele, and the Schaubühne ("The Life of Vernon Subutex," "House of Dance").
