The rock and pop scene of the former GDR was far from limited to Puhdys, Karat, Silly, and City. There were also many other top bands in various genres. In the field of electronic music, the former Federal Republic of Germany boasted artists such as Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, Kraftwerk, and others.
The electronic band in the East, on the other hand, was called POND. It was founded in 1978 by Wolfgang Paule Fuchs in Berlin's Prenzlauer Berg district and celebrated its 45th stage anniversary in 2023. They were the first group in the GDR to perform electronic instrumental music live.
Their LPs "Planetenwind" and "Auf der Seidenstrasse" sold hundreds of thousands of copies. This makes POND the most successful and popular band of its kind in East Germany and they are still active today. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the band faced existential questions along with the great freedom they enjoyed. Wolfgang Fuchs took the plunge.
His memoirs read like a special piece of musical history that lives on even after the fall of the Wall.
Wolfgang Fuchs, nicknamed Paule (after his former idol Paul McCartney), is a passionate rock musician, synthesizer artist, and POND mastermind, and even a state-certified musician, as was customary and required in the GDR. In his book, he recounts his musical life in the GDR up to the present day. It has already been published in its third reprint as a hardcover in a particularly fine edition, supplemented with additional chapters and photos up to the present day.
