Three hundred German men, wrote Walther Rathenau at the beginning of the 20th century, determined the economic fortunes of the continent. He was referring to the close-knit network of bankers, captains of industry, and lobbyists that had emerged with the rise of companies like Allianz, Krupp, and Siemens.
They knew each other, they talked to each other—and they coordinated their efforts. Until the 1990s, this network, known as "Deutschland AG," shaped politics and corporate culture in the Federal Republic.
Konstantin Richter assembles the stories of these movers and shakers into a fast-paced, dramatic narrative.
