Humboldt Forum Rooftop Terrace: Panoramic Views of Berlin's Landmarks and Art in Architecture

The rooftop terrace of the Humboldt Forum offers one of the most spectacular views of Berlin from a height of approximately 30 meters. From here, visitors can enjoy a breathtaking panorama of the German capital and its most famous landmarks. Highlights include Museum Island, the Brandenburg Gate, Alexanderplatz, Berlin Cathedral, and St. Mary's Church. Lesser-known sights such as Neukölln Town Hall, Teufelsberg, and Humboldthain can also be spotted from this unique vantage point.

Art in Architecture on the Humboldt Forum Rooftop Terrace

The panoramic view of Berlin is complemented by extraordinary artworks created specifically for the rooftop terrace.

Insurgentes Sur by Antje Schiffers and Thomas Sprenger

To the east, the artwork Insurgentes Sur by Antje Schiffers and Thomas Sprenger becomes part of the Berlin skyline. The golden installation evokes the silhouette of Mexico City, one of Berlin's partner cities.

The title refers to the southern section of Avenida de los Insurgentes, the longest main avenue in the Mexican capital. At the same time, the artwork connects to the research expeditions of Alexander von Humboldt, who stayed in Mexico City during his journey in 1803.

The use of gold leaf establishes a connection to the collections of the Ethnological Museum while encouraging reflection on historical and contemporary global power relationships.

The Cosmos – Things Fall Apart by Emeka Ogboh

Another highlight is the sound installation The Cosmos – Things Fall Apart by artist Emeka Ogboh. The work takes inspiration from Wilhelm von Humboldt's fascination with language and cultural exchange.

The multi-channel sound installation is based on the Igbo folk song "Nne, Nne, Udu" from Nigeria. The song tells the story of a young girl whose carelessness while carrying a valuable clay pot causes it to shatter. The narrative serves as a metaphor for social and cultural transformation.

At the same time, the work draws on the rich oral storytelling tradition of the Igbo people and critically reflects on the impact of colonial and missionary influences on their culture.

The sound installation can be heard every hour on the hour. Further information about the artworks and the Art in Architecture program can be found here.
