Spreepark Plänterwald

Ruins of the former GDR amusement park

The Spreepark in Plänterwald is visibly taking shape. Its central landmark is the 45-metre-high Ferris wheel, which, after around 20 years of disuse, has been dismantled, extensively refurbished and reassembled. Following a successful safety inspection, the 40 gondolas are set to start turning again in spring 2027.

Spreepark of the future

Together with the Ferris wheel, which is visible from afar, the other facilities in the centre of the future Spreepark are also being renovated, including the artificial water basin, the English village, the workshop and the open-air stage, which were built during the GDR era. Step by step, a new place for culture, leisure and recreation is emerging here.

The historic Eierhäuschen restaurant has already been restored and is currently (until March 2026) looking for a new operator. Artist residences, exhibition and event spaces are also being created in and around the building – also as a conscious reminder of the diverse project spaces of the 1990s.

The historic restaurant in the newly restored Eierhäuschen is currently looking for a new operator. In and around the Eierhäuschen, artist residences, exhibition and event spaces invite visitors to enjoy contemporary art, exchange ideas and meet new people – also as a reminder of the many project spaces of the transitional period in the 1990s.

Guided tours & discovery tours

Once a month, the Spreepark Art Space offers guided tours around the historic Eierhäuschen. And from April 2026, construction site tours of the Spreepark will also be offered again.

A well-developed network of footpaths and cycle paths already invites visitors to take walks and bike rides around the site. Stern und Kreisschifffahrt also sails to Spreepark with its solar catamaran: The landing stage near the Eierhäuschen is a regular stop on the popular two-hour"Grüne Spreefahrt" route, which begins at the Jannowitzbrücke and leads via the Oberbaumbrücke, Treptowers and Treptower Park to the Plänterwald and back. Passengers can board and alight at all stations.

History of Spreepark

Spreepark was opened in 1969 as the first and only amusement park in the GDR in Plänterwald. As a "culture park", it was unique in the GDR and quickly became a popular destination for day trips. Even back then, its landmark was the Ferris wheel, visible from afar, which was renovated in 1989.

After reunification , the park was adapted to Western standards. However, the associated higher admission prices led to a decline in visitor numbers. In 2001, the private operator filed for bankruptcy, and the approximately 25-hectare site subsequently lay fallow for more than ten years. Today, the Spreepark is undergoing extensive renovation and redesign. Look forward to its reopening in spring 2027!
