Hertha BSC

From the “Plumpe” into the Olympic Stadium

"Ha-Ho-He, Hertha BSC" - when this call echoes through Westend, the Berlin football club is playing in the Olympic Stadium.

Founded in 1892, the club’s history has been a real rollercoaster ride ever since. Although the club were German champions in 1930 and 1931, the fact remains that any Hertha fan knows what suffering means. The 2009/10 season, in which the team that had finished fourth in the Bundesliga the previous year suffered a truly sensational collapse, is a good example of this. The club’s relegation back to the 2. Bundesliga on 15 May 2012, in a scandal-ridden match against second-tier side Fortuna Düsseldorf, also caused a stir. After years in the top flight, the ‘Old Lady’ is now back in the 2. Bundesliga – though this does nothing to diminish the love of the Berliners.

Before Hertha moved into the Olympic Stadium for the 1963/64 Bundesliga season, the club played its home matches at the ‘Plumpe’, the stadium at Gesundbrunnen in Wedding that was well known at the time and has since been demolished. Between 1986 and 1988, whilst competing in the Berlin Amateur Oberliga, and for a few home matches during the 1988/89 second-division season, Hertha moved to the Poststadion due to a lack of spectator interest. Today, interest is far greater, with an average of over 50,000 spectators at the Olympic Stadium cheering on their team.

Alongside the men’s professional footballers, Hertha’s heart is increasingly set on women’s football too, with the first team recently celebrating a much-celebrated promotion to the 2nd Division. The club also offers other sports such as boxing, skittles and table tennis.
