With the “ICONIC – A Timeless Journey of Culture, Society and Mobility” exhibition in its Berlin representative office, the Volkswagen Group presents icons of modernity which have shaped, among other things, mobility, design, architecture and art from the 1950s to the present day.
Icons are the embodiment of inspiration and encourage us to break new ground – in science and technology, in the creative sphere and in society. They are all connected by their unique stories, identity and mission. ICONIC offers a look at icons that unite modernity, the pioneering spirit and passion – at outstanding personalities, technical innovations, visionary architecture and timeless design language.
Throughout the unique exhibition visitors will discover legendary vehicles of the Group brands, such as the immortal VW Bus and the VW Beetle, and more than 100 other exhibits, some originals, from the worlds of art, design, architecture, fashion & music and special momentsfrom the more recent past.
Looking forward, ICONIC opens a new chapter: travel.
It is more than movement – it is an expression of freedom, longing, and identity. Every journey tells a personal story and shapes our understanding of the world and ourselves.
While icons of modernity set collective standards, travel is the individual icon: a unique experience that means something different for everyone – yet connects us all.
In a time of change, the automobile becomes the stage for new forms of travel: electric, connected, and increasingly autonomous. Discover how travel as an individual icon has shaped our society – and continues to create new horizons.

The special arrangement of the exhibition space enables a well-flowing tour through the individual decades from the 1950s right into the future. Unique perspectives on culture and society are opened up with pieces by Pop Art creator Andy Warhol and famous design objects, such as the Egg Chair by designer and architect Arne Jacobsen. Thematic islands embed travel throughout the exhibition.
It then gets interactive for visitors in the multimedia “Icons’ World” space. After the visual journey through time the immersive landscape opens up a look into the future. The multimedia projections allow us to experience mobility visions, architectural worlds and technologies that shape the icons of tomorrow. They animate via touch-sensitive buttons and invite us to communicate with “IDA”, an empathetic assistant, based on artificial intelligence.
ICONIC thus becomes an experience that shows people the wealth of ideas with which we can shape the world and icons of the future.
It is open from Monday to Saturday and entry is free.
