The exhibition explores cycles of creation, deconstruction, and renewal.
Morey views painting and working with ceramics as a form of drawing.
The starting point for the works was an exercise in which something was to be developed from nothing:
An object was selected and drawn repeatedly, placing it in different situations, narratives, and variations. Through this process, drawing became a method for developing images and ideas within painting itself.
Influenced by Philip Guston and his approach to drawing and painting, as well as by the ideas in *I Paint What I Want to See*, Morey’s work explores how images can be invented, transformed, and brought to life through the act of creation.
Body parts, everyday objects, and fragments from the studio are drawn, repeated, altered, and recombined.
The paintings emerge through accumulation and interruption, allowing forms to emerge and develop without it being clear from the outset where they will lead.
The ceramic works created by Emily Morey take up this process and expand upon it by translating forms and ideas from the paintings into three-dimensional space.
The works are also influenced by horror and zombie films, particularly their blend of humor, naivety, and grotesque imagery.
These references inform the playful and sometimes eerie forms, in which the familiar becomes alien and fragments can take on a new life of their own.
