An interview with Caterina Lobenstein
Millions of Germans were members of the Wehrmacht and the NSDAP, yet many of their descendants knew nothing about it. Recently, anyone has been able to search the membership records for relatives with just a few clicks.
What does a look at one’s own family reveal about Germany’s culture of remembrance? When does coming to terms with the past become an honest confrontation, and when is it merely a reassuring ritual? And how does remembrance change when more and more Germans have no personal connection to the Nazi era, for example because their families only immigrated later?
