At just 18 years old, Erich Wolfgang Korngold made a brilliant debut with his opera Violanta, which instantly transformed him from a child prodigy to the leading opera composer of his generation.
The work, premiered at the Vienna Court Opera, combines dramatic passion with rich, colorful orchestration and catchy melodies. In Violanta, Korngold captures the unmistakable tone of fin-de-siècle Vienna – characterized by apocalyptic sentiments, Art Nouveau, and the ideas of Freud, Klimt, and Schnitzler.
Now the Deutsche Oper Berlin is bringing the powerful one-act drama back to the stage – under the musical direction of Sir Donald Runnicles and directed by David Hermann. The gripping story of the Venetian Violanta, who plots revenge on a seducer during Carnival and reveals her own longing in the process, unfolds in a thrilling, 80-minute operatic evening without an interval.
American soprano Laura Wilde shines in the title role, one of the few singers to have performed in both parts of Korngold's operatic debut – The Ring of Polycrates and Violanta.
This new production is a must-see for opera fans seeking to discover musical rarities with psychological depth and opulent sound. Violanta – a rediscovery full of intensity, sensuality, and musical refinement.
