How do you build democracy into concrete? The Märkisches Viertel was planned as a modern large-scale housing estate shortly after the Berlin Wall was built. Initially celebrated as “built democracy” and later criticized as a social hotspot, the neighborhood was also located directly on the Death Strip.

Architect Christiane Borgelt leads a tour through the Märkische Viertel and highlights the visions, fractures, and qualities inherent in the housing estate.
She will explain in detail on site the architectural-historical significance of the individual buildings, which is not immediately apparent just by walking by.
Borgelt has also collaborated with the planners from that era, offering a unique perspective on the history of the housing estate.
