With its unique structure, it is not only an integral part of Berlin's musical life, but also enjoys an excellent reputation beyond the city's and Germany's borders as the first address for contemporary musical creation.

The series was founded in 1989 on the initiative of Rainer Rubbert and Martin Daske and has since been supported with funds from the Berlin Senate for Culture.

Every Tuesday, soloists and ensembles perform contemporary programs focusing on music of the late 20th and 21st centuries in the serene ambience of the BKA Theater. The more than 900 concerts have now featured well over 1000 world premieres. Although primarily a podium for professional musicians living in Berlin, the "Unerhörte Musik" also hosts renowned ensembles from Germany and abroad, and the foreign artists are encouraged to present works by Berlin composers in their concerts as well.

In addition to performers specializing in new music, it also offers well-known soloists the opportunity to realize programs for which there is no room in the established concert schedule. Thus, the series has become an interface for the entire Berlin New Music scene: for performers, composers, musicians new to Berlin, and the music-interested public alike.

For more than 10 years, the artistic directors Rainer Rubbert and Martin Daske - both renowned composers themselves - have been assisted by an advisory board that currently includes the composer Charlotte Seither, the trumpeter and publisher Nathan Plante and the composer Maximilian Marcoll.
