Two close friends, Proteus and Valentine, fall in love with the same woman: Silvia, the daughter of the Duke of Milan. Proteus betrays his love for Julia, plots against his friend Valentine to eliminate him, and ultimately tries to win Silvia for himself by force. Despite these and other moral dilemmas, the story culminates in a surprisingly abrupt happy ending.
