In Michael Thalheimer's acclaimed production of TRISTAN UND ISOLDE, the focus is not on the external spectacle, but on the inner drama of the characters. With scenic minimalism, Thalheimer reveals the emotional depths and the tension between desire and death – entirely in the spirit of Wagner, who, with this work, marked a radical departure from the Romantic operatic canon.

The production, a co-production with the Grand Théâtre de Genève, now comes to the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Sir Donald Runnicles assumes the musical direction, continuing a long tradition of important Tristan interpretations at the opera. Clay Hilley and Elisabeth Teige – both celebrated as leading Wagnerian voices of their generation – shine in the leading roles.

Teige, who took Berlin audiences by storm as a spontaneous stand-in in 2017, now returns as Isolde after successes as Elisabeth and Sieglinde – in her first Wagner premiere role at the Deutsche Oper. An evening of intense musical psychology – between Eros, Thanatos, and deeply felt devotion.
